The following words are brief excerpts from my journal that I wrote sometime during the creation process of the painting they're numbered with. Some are literal; some are poetic. Some refer directly to the painting; others are merely musings that reflect my state of mind at that time. Take them all with a grain of salt...
THE ESSENCE OF YOU AND I
“The abstract world is a place to escape from striving and overthinking. Leave your brain behind for a moment. Let your existence speak. There’s nothing more here than the essence of your soul here.”
RIVER FLOWS IN YOU
“The presence of the Lord washed over me as I was painting in my studio today. I was overcome with a deep, sacred feeling that filled my whole body and consumed my existence in those moments. I was brought to tears time and time again as I sat there in his grace. God is real; God is good; God loves us. He truly loves us, on a personal level. He knows us, and the truth of his reality was made apparent to me today in a way that it never has been before.”
NEW HEART
“You don’t have to live here, this pattern filled prison you’ve created inside of your mind. Today I escaped for a while, tomorrow I’ll get loose for longer, and the next day I’ll be completely free. Notice the thoughts, then let them pass by, making room for the presence of God to settle in.”

SPIRIT OF THE WHALE (A DREAM)
I am the surface,
You are the depths,
My world ripples and breaks in the wind,
Below you are still,
The waves of my life crash upon the shore,
Still you remain the same.
VALLEY OF PEACE
Peace, bring it all to peace.
In order to bring peace to the world,
Strive to make your own life peaceful.
So much conflict, so much chaos,
Most of it exists within.
My own fears and insecurities,
My own agenda and expectations.
You call me from the valley of peace,
A place that exists in the midst of all these trivial things,
Like the eye of the storm, it’s always there,
And it’s where I want to be.
FIRE WITHIN
“This fiery spirit that you breathed into me at the start can never be quenched, but it can be misdirected. For too long, the enemy has succeeded in doing just that, and you’ve watched as I’ve given my passion to all the wrong things. It’s a flame that can never die, but one that’s prone to wander away from your guiding light.”
HUMAN
Show me the human struggle,
Show me the human fight.
Show me the human animal,
Today I felt at least somewhat alive.
Show me the beauty in the human struggle,
Show me how to win the human fight.
Show me how to be more than an animal,
I know there’s more to this life.
GOD IN US
Like a leaf lifted by a mighty wind, I float away.
Carried by a force I haven’t felt before,
I am one with the tree, a little piece,
like all the other little leaves.
It’s time to go, it’s time to fall,
Go down, down, down and embrace the ground,
back to the earth from which we grew,
Out of darkness, made brand new.
THE ONLY LOVE THAT CAN

The world needs you.
Eternity needs you.
Take the risk of truly believing in something,
Believing so fully in it that you pour your life into it.
You might just make it a reality.
You might just change the world.
